UTVs are a fun way to explore nature and spend time with loved ones. While a UTV is a recipe for fun, without following the proper safety measures, a day of fun can turn into a trip to the hospital.

Before you plan your next UTV outing, make sure to invest in the right gear, and follow proper safety guidelines, to keep your experience safe and enjoyable for all!

Get The Right Safety Gear

Part of staying safe on a side-by-side means utilizing the correct gear to protect yourself as you ride.

Starting with your clothes, you should wear long pants, long sleeves, gloves, and boots to protect as much of your skin as possible from abrasions, scrapes, and debris kicked up on the trail.

You should also invest in a well-fitted helmet rated for extreme riding conditions, which could either be a motorcycle helmet with a full face mask or a motocross helmet and a pair of goggles for extra eye protection.

Be Prepared for Emergencies

In the event that an accident occurs, it’s best to carry a few things with you along the ride.

UTVs come with storage compartments, where you can store important items for emergency purposes. Some of these items should include:

  • First aid kit filled with bandages and creams
  • UTV repair kit
  • Phone and charger
  • Emergency radio

Carrying these items with you will ensure you are prepared to handle minor repairs or injuries while you ride.

Keep Your Arms and Limbs Inside Your Vehicle

UTVs have an “envelope of protection” around riders to protect them from losing limbs. Much like riding on a roller coaster, your body must be fully inside your UTV to ride it safely.

Sounds easy right? Not for everyone.

The impulse to feel the wind on your arm or your face can be overwhelming when you’re cruising through the backroads. But, it’s essential to check that impulse so that you can remain safe and keep control of the vehicle.

Remember to use your handholds and keep your eyes on the trail. And, of course, keep your arms inside the vehicle at all times!
